At the foot of Mount Horai, just a short distance from Lake Biwa, Shiro Shimizu has established his kiln.

Guided by his philosophy of “never buying clay, but digging it myself,” Shimizu-san creates everything from tea ceremony wares to sculptural objects, allowing the character of the earth itself to guide the work. We are deeply drawn to the powerful, distinctive expressions that emerge from this intimate relationship with the soil.

This shallow bowl beautifully captures the traces of Shimizu-san’s handwork.

Its natural hues and softly formed shape are particularly striking, as though the earth itself had risen gently into form. A versatile piece, it brings out the beauty of colorful seasonal vegetables, whether served as dressed greens or alongside seasonal pickles.
